Honestly, as basic as that unit is I would take the car to a shop and get it tuned for $100-$150. It shouldn't cost much as it hasn't got even half the flexibility and features of the model that followed it. Install is yourself, zero out the dials and your car should run as if it isn't even there. Then get it tuned and save money.

It's not a difficult setup to tune though but yes, you need a laptop and you need a wideband with data logging functionality. You could do it on the fly with someone else driving and you staring back and forth frantically between the tach and the the O2 gauge but on the dyno they'll be able to dial it in much tighter than you will without a more sophisticated setup.
