Smelling a burning clutch is not that uncommon really. The problem is whether it slips or chatters while engaging the clutch. If you are driving down the road in second or third and mash the gas pedal, does the engine rev up but not speed up?

I had a very weak stock clutch in an old Fiero and after repeated starts and stops while teaching my daughter how to drive a clutch, it started slipping. After it cooled down it was fine again. You can adjust the pedal travel with the adjuster nut on the clutch master cylinder too.

Let us know.
