Being made from alloy increases the strength of the case and transfers the heat away much better than steel will. Tests on a rear diff cover for example showed a 20*C difference between a steel and a alloy one. Making the pan deeper as I have done increases the fluid volume which also allows it to run cooler. I had trouble that before the I made the deeper pan that the shifts would begin to slow on hot days when under load like towing.
