if you can smell coolant it may be throwing it out of the overflow bottle or you may have another leak, check under the car make sure theres no drips
check all hoses in and around the engine for leaks, you'll see little stains from old water
check the water level in the radiator as it may be low
do you hear a waterfall sound in the dashboard when you start it up cold?
