There have been several others asking about removing the oil pan while it is still in the car and to my knowledge, no one has been successful yet without removing the crossmember. So it appears that pulling the engine is best because all the seals can be replaced or removing the crossmember. Either way, a lot of work, but to me the crossmember removal seems the easiest, relatively speaking of course.

Hope you and your son enjoy the experience of working together on the car. I know that was so very common years ago when you could actually WORK on your cars. Manufacturers and engineers seem to have taken most of that fun out of cars anymore..........sigh.
