The bearings need to be lubed before the shafts spins at an astromonical speed.
1) put some oil in the opening of the side of the cartridge (cartridge: the center of the turbo).
And if you want to be obsessive compulsive about it, unplug the wire that goes to the coil packs (or pull out the EFI fuse), then crank the motor over, then start it.
Basically, the turbo spins from exhaust gases, but if there is no ignition, then there is no air pressure coming out of the engine to spin the turbo (or at least, not much anyways).
Bottom line, YES, you need to have the inside of that turbo lubed before running it.
Many warranties are void unless you do this.
