Question N/A Intake

I was thinking of getting a K&N filter with that nice straight pipe to the throttle body, always thought it looked nice and clean. Then I read this in a Supra History Story:

ACIS (Acoustic Controlled Induction System), a method of controlling air compression pulses inside the intake piping to increase power, was also apart of the 7M-GE's technological arsenal.

So it seems that the Engineers didn't just throw that big barrel shaped piece into the intake pipe for no reason. If anybody out there who knows what they are talking about would like to maybe explain this, or give it a thumbs up (keep it), or a thumbs down (chop it and get the K&N) please feel free to chime in with your expertise.
