I believe the old R12 is pretty much banned from everywhere... Like it was previously stated, you can buy the retrofit kit to convert from R12 to R134a. This kit should come with 2 valves that thread onto your existing ones, a couple cans of R134a, and a hose to connect the cans to your A/C system. Before any work is done, you will need to remove all of the old R12 (it's illegal here in the US to do it yourself, so we have to take it to a shop to drain it). Once that's done, you install two valves to retrofit; one for the High side service port and one for the Low side service port; these thread onto the stock valves. You then will take your 2 or 3 cans of R134a and the connecting hose (it should have a handle that threads onto the can of freon, a valve to puncture the can once threaded, and a quick disconnect hose to attach to your A/C system). Turn your car on, and put your A/C on full power. Shake the first freon can very well. Tap into your first can of R134a as previously described, and connect the quick disconnect to the LOW side service port, leaving the can in an upside down position (the pressure is too high on the High side port, and that can cause the can to burst). After a short period of time, the A/C system will have sucked all of the new freon from your can into the A/C system. Once that's done, disconnect the can and repeat with the other can's as necessary. After completing these steps, sit back and enjoy the cold air in your newly retrofitted A/C system!
