You kinds do sound like a noob lol. But ignition timing is easy take off your distributor cap remembering where the number one plug wire comes out from it says it on the cap. Then make sure your car is out of gear and the parking brake is set. On your crank shaft pully look for the timing marks behind the pully on the timing cover. There will be an indentation and a 0 10 20 30 these are your 0 and 10 before TDC 20 and so on. On the pully there will be a little line on the back of the pully close to those marks. Turn it to where it faces the 0 this is your TDC. Look at the rotor button in the distributor it should be pointing towards where the number one plug wire comes out of the cap. If it isnt then you have one of 2 things you are on the exhaust stroke or it is really far out. Also look at the adjustment slide on the side if it looks like you need to go a way to get to 1 but it is maxed out the you need to pull the distributor and move it the correct way one tooth. If all this stuff checks out then it is time to check to see if your cams are lined where they should be. Pull the top timing cover with the crank pully at 0 and look at the cam sprockets there is a prevelent line on the rear part of the timing cover these are your timing marks. On the sprockets you will also see marks these marks should line up if they dont then you are out of time and this would explain your problem. If they check out the you are left up to moveing the distibutor while the car is running and you are shooting a timing light and the mark on the crank, which by the way while you have it at 0 during all of this take some white out and make a mark on the crank pully and the 10 mark this is your spark timing. 10 degrees before. what you do is turn the car on and connect the timing light clamp around the nuber one spark plug wire and the black and red wire from the light in the battery terminals respectivly. and shoot the light towards the marks you made and if the mark is not lined up turn the distributor till it does line up. Also I forgot on the check engine port put a short wire between t and e1 plugs. Thats it for timing if that dont fix it then take off all of your spark plug wires and check them for damage like cracks and stuff like that if you find anything like that replace them.
