I once hauled a 15' Christmas tree with my MK4. The trunk was right up next to the rear view mirror. I've also hauled 4x8 plywood/drywall/wonderboard with it. Oh, and a friend of mine hauled a 50" plasma TV in his, with the hatch fully closed!

In other words, it's got tons of space in the "rear boot" (hatch area), when you flip the rear seat back forward.
