Supramacist is right I dont know if someone put grease in there and I really dont know why. That is nasty no wonder the timeing belt is all eat up. Like he said it should be clean in there take the cam sprokets off then the back plate and clean it as best you can. All that grease and grime isnt good for the belt period just remember when you take all of that stuff off remember where it goes and how it all lines up because it would suck to get it wrong.
