Nope.
86.5-88.5 are the same ECU, using yellow plugs. 89.5-92 are gray plug, and the wiring pins are different.
They are NOT interchangeable.

So long as the ECU is '90-92, yes. TEMS has nothing to do with the ECU. It has it's own computer...

It only matters if he's automatic. If he's got a manual, it doesn't matter at all. Manual cars can use automatic ECU's and wiring harnesses, but not the other way around.
