I'm not sure, but I think that hub has something to do with the airbag. If you remove it, that should probably be the only downside? When I swapped my '94 oem mkiv tt 'brick' airbag steering wheel for an MR2 w/airbag, the only thing I had to add is an airbag plug adapter...oh, and I lost my cruise control lever.
