Just thought I would introduce myself. I just purchased a 88 Supra. Been looking for one of these since about... umm... 1988.. lol. Finally found the one I liked and bought it for 6k CDN. No idea if it was worth it, but im older now, so its "my toy". Have had many celicas and corollas in the past and just finished getting rid of my 2000 Accord (really didnt like that car).
Here's some pics:
- Has a nice soundsystem, but comes with a subwoofer that takes up most of the back area... Im not a fan of blowing my eardrums out.. so that will be first thing to go... (my kids arent happy about that.. but... Im not 18 anymore)
- also came with the stock rims.. which I will have to restore somehow... but new winter rims. I wanted to go stock.. but my kids wont let me. The Rims are MSR btw.. couldnt tell from the center cap until I accidentally ran across some on the web.
- the previous owner bought this at 14 years old and worked "free" at an autobody shop to restore it. Then he blew 2 engines and this one has new one and new turbo in it with about 3k miles on both. (I have all documents from repairs so I did a little research). Only rust spot is on driver side right in front of tire.. just a silver dollar size spot.. first thing to fix!
I will probably become a fairly active member here as I have always wanted one of these, and now that I have it, I want to take care of it properly. Been reading all the massive amount of information regarding care, conversion and maintenance info and you guys rock!
Just a quick question... I havent been able to find this out, but for the turbo in this type of car, is there a min octane rating and are there any maintenance duties I need to know about to keep the turbo from folding?
Also, maybe wrong area for this, but the air conditioning system on 88's... is there a freon issue? Will I need to rebuild it for todays coolants?
Will talk to you all lots!
oh yeah.. I'll let you guys know what the appraisal comes out at. I may have overpaid.. but who cares! Took me 7 months of hunting to find a left hand drive supra that didnt need me to do a frame up restoration... they dont live well in Canadian climate apparently..
