turbo lag won't be a problem if you keep it in the correct gear for the the corner. Do you have any experience autocrossing? If not, race it STOCK, get used to it, and then make upgrades. Get new tires (not slicks), springs, and shocks. Sway bars, brakes (get better pads and powerslots, or go with wilwood's), slicks, ect.

Engine changes would be made to make it more durable during the hard driving. I would replace my shifter cup and seat with better units to make shifting smoother and firmer (or spend the $500+ for a short throw). Clutch, radiator, synthetic oil, and change it often.

Do it gradual, and enjoy the experience and get used to the car and what it's trying to tell you.
