My biggest alternator nightmare came after I installed a deck, an amp and two 10's and crossed the subs and spliced the rear speakers off the amp as well... I must've replaced ~4 alternators in total before I got rid of the car...
The most noticible thing I've seen in all my alternator issues is: "If you get a jump, the car only lasts a couple of minutes (if that) after you seperate the jumper cables from the battery. Denoting that your battery did have enough charge to start and run, but is not getting that power back from the alternator and the battery can no longer support your distributor."
Def. check w/ the volt meter before spending the $$$ and time to swap out the alternator.. just to make sure that is the issue... But it definately sounds like that's it...
