the cam gear basically advances or retards the timing on the cam ( opens the inlet valves earlier or later in the engine cycle ) this inturn will give you power lower or higer in the rev range, depending if you move it to the plus or minus side on the gear. zero is standard timing. it can be a simple way to gain power,but there are trade offs. I had mine done when i first put the 7mgte in my mk2. BUT i have a microtech EMS witch was tuned on a dyno via a laptop. it let the engine rev out more giving me about 274whp , great on open roads but annoying in traffic. At low rpm in traffic it was not as smooth. It tended to surge a bit while holding accelerator steady. No problem on the gas ,or of it ! But i was always in traffic going to and from work so it got annoying . So next time i had it serviced i had them set it back to fairly standard timing, witch dropped my power to 234whp. still running 15 pd boost with both tunes. but made it alot smoother at low steady revs .
