Sup guys I'm new here. Picked up an 87 turbo yesterday for 500. It has a blown head gasket. But today at work I got busy on it:
Ran my compression test, cylinders 1&6 were 120 and the rest were 30. But no water in the oil.
The motor was leaking out of the main seals, low turbo intercooler hose (the big one running around the bottom) and lower radiator hose.
I also noticed my throw out bearing was gonna go out and the timing belt and water pump have never been done. The car has 140k original miles, clean title. New michelin tires and no suspension problems. My interior is shot so I'm looking for some of that. But anyways back on topic:
So after I realized all that I needed I decided to just pull the motor and rebuild right the first time. This was my first actual pull all by myself. Took me 3 hours of straight working. I work as a mechanic and we were dead today so I had all the tools to myself. This motor was the hardest thing to get out. And to pop the shift fork out of the tranny to get it (this is where I noticed my throw out bearing) clutch has plenty of meat left, and my flywheel looks like its lightened.
So the motor is chillin on a hoist right now and here are the questions before I tear into it next tuesday:
Any way to tell of my turbo is good?
Arp head bolts are recommended as I've noticed. Any special ones needed?
I want to make this a build too, not just stock.? What kind of boost gauge should I run?
What is needed to switch to a MHG?
And toyota repair manuals I can look at? Don't want clymers or haynes or whatever.
Here are a few pics I managed to grab
