Cool, glad you didn't go back to the shop. I'd bet any money the guy knew exactly what he was doing (trying to make an easy buck for christmas at your expense!)
Anyway hope you manage to get it sorted with the calipers. It could probably be fixed by cleaning/servicing the existing calipers but if you can afford the new ones (plus pads) that's all good & then you know they're fine.
