Smile checking your thermostat

Hi!
I've been reading these pages recently and a lot has been said about bad thermostats. If you think you have a bad one -- try this : put a known good one and the suspect one in an OLD metal container of water ( enough to cover the thermostats ) and heat the water up -- it should be closed . then as the water starts to boil ,it should open up fully at the same time as the good one , and close when dipped in cold water.
Doing this first -BEFORE you fit the new one will prove the thermostat and give you an idea of it's opening temperature , opening before the water has boiled - engine may be running cool / late or not opening fully -possibility of overheating.
If you have an infra-red thermometer you can measure the temperature more accurately during the test.
Failed thermostats should fail safe --remain open when cold.
