Did you also make sure that the cam gears lined up with their timing marks? They will only line up properly every other rotation of the crankshaft.

When the timing mark on the crank is at 0? and the cam gears line up with their timing marks, the engine is at TDC on the compression stroke, which is when you want to install the distributor. You also want to make sure that the dizzy is aligned properly on install, otherwise your ignition timing would most likely be off (and the car will crank and not start).
