There's nothing ghetto about what you did.... unless you used the temp probe and thermostat setup from a stove.... that's ghetto.
I had a Bosch on my MKIII, I went to the parts store and looked through the hoses for one which reduced in size... found one in about 2 minutes ($10), cut off the excess and installed with no forcing needed.
