Defective speedo

87 Supra Turbo has developed a squeaking in speedometer. Understand connection is electronic. not cable. Dealer says remedy is remove whole instrument panel and replace speedo, expensive. Anybody have a better idea? Doesn't seem to be any access to oil instrument interior.
