Weird clutch problem
I replaced the cluch on my 84 supra and when I put it together I couldn't put it in gear when it was running, but I could with it off. I can start it in gear and drive it but can't put it back in gear if I stop with it running. I took it back apart and put a new flywheel in it thinking when I had the flywheel resurfaced they took to much off. I still have the same problem. The cluth is not completely disengaging. It is so little you can't even tell when starting it in gear. I replaced clutch pilot bearing throwout bearing and flywheel. What can it be? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I talked to local Toyata mechanics and they were useless.

ASSUMING..... everything worked correctly before you put the new clutch in, then it sounds like a weak pressure plate. If everything was not working correctly then it could be master or slave cylinder, or just air in the lines. Where did you get the clutch assy and is it new or remanufactured?

Worked but end of life
Thanks for the reply. This one has stumped me. I have taken the tranny out three times now thinking maybe there was a problem with the fork or throw out bearing then fly wheel. Upside is I can now take the tranny out in around 1/2 an hour by myself (timed). It did work but the clutch was worn out and was starting to slip fairly bad still drivable but end of it's life. The clutch is an oem and was new. I have bled the master and slave. Could it just be a defective preasure plate? If that were so wouldn't it slip?
It drives great and doesn't slip at all. If it were a defective or weak preasure plate how can I test it? Do I have to just put another one in to see if it works? again thanks for the help. |

A lot of times when you get the pressure plate from the dealership, it's one that they have had re manufactured. They resurface the plate that the clutch disc makes contact with, which in turn means the forks on the pressure plate does not push in as far as it should. When you push in on the clutch it releases pressure off of the clutch disc. If they have cut away some of the surface of the pressure plate, then it will not allow all of the pressure to be off of the disc. Therefore it acts like clutch will not work completely. I only get new pressure plates when I replace a clutch because of that reason.
I hope that helps. Mark

What to do?
What would you recommend for the solution? Is there a good aftermarket source I can use to get a good preasure plate?
Thanks for the help. |

I get most of my clutch assemblies from Advance or Oreilly's. I've always had good results with their parts. I bought one from Autozone and had to take it back out because of weak springs on the pressure plate. Alway's get new parts, not remanufactured.
Good luck, Mark

clutch problems
this message is to WBEAMS.
Ok i know this may sound a bit stupid, sometimes when you put a new clutch in a vehicle , when you bolt down the pressure plate before you put the trans back in and it feels like the pressure plate is bolted down tight, well it is not down tight trust me i had the same problem with meine. what you need to do is park it on a flat surface and then go under the car and remove the inspection cover from the bell housing and then have one person in front of the car with a ratchet and socket on the crankshaft nut and another person in the car holding the clutch down and you under the car with the right sized socket and ratchet and have the one person slowely turn the crankshaft untill you see the bolts and tighten them one at a time, but remember have someone inside the car holding the clutch down while doing this. I wish you well with your supra. 1985 SUPRA mk2 |
