Default wheel spacers

So I just bought a MK2(83) last night and I've been researching everything to build it up. And I noticed that wheels are hard to find due to the offset. I've been reading that people are using spacers to fix the offset issue. I'm planning on getting 16" rims. Do people make or buy the spacers and what is everyones opinion on that idea, good or bad??
