fuel type
hi there guys . am a newbie to this forum so please excuse me if ths question has come up before.
am now on my 3rd mkii my question is what type of fuel can i use (unleaded or super unleaded) and do i need to do any mods to run on unleaded. the last 2 mkiis i owned, i only ever ran on 4 star or lrp. i have now recently bought an almost perfect 1986. however leaded is not available in the uk any more. can i run her on unleaded and do i need to do any timing changes. also am i better off with standard unleaded or should be using the higher octane super unleaded. cheers mark |
I would follow what the manufacturer recommends.
There must be a sticker somewhere on the car, check the glove box. I would also think that the manual would tell you what you should feed it too. If I were to guess, I would say that you could use the regular unleaded. If you hear pinging, go to a higher octane gas. If you have an '86, then your compression ratio is 9.2:1 That does not sound so high to me. High compression ratio engines and forced induction engines (supercharged/turbocharged) will need higher octane fuel so they don't ping. Unless you have a lot of carbon build up (which would increase your actual compression ratio), I would bet that the regular is good enough for you. |
hi there thanks for that.
have now spoken to toyota uk they said about the same the car was originally designes to run on leaded. i can run it on standard unleaded by retarding the ignition timing by 2-3 degrees mark |
Glad I could help:)
Sometimes I forget that I had an MKII also. heheh Now that I think of it, I just used regular unleaded when I had it. I should have mentioned that. I will post my MKII in my own thread later for you MKII'ers and ask you guys what you think of it....but that is another topic. |
try to use the standard unleaded fuel... if dont have the standard/regular unleaded one then try to use the higher octane one and see if it makes any differece....
