Rear End Howl
yeah, i recently bought a 1985 SOUP, and the rear end is howling like a mother f**ker. so im thinking of putting a different rear end in. i dont want that posi trac, one wheel spin bullsh*t. i searched high and low for info on a differential from an MK2 that didnt have posi. but i cant find anything.
im pretty sure that the 1982's have a different rear end then the others. but im not sure 100% could someone shed some light on my situation here please thanks BTMK2 |
Well if you dont want just one wheel to spin then you want a limited slip rear(AKA a posi)..Almost all of the p-types(with fender flares)came with a limited slip..All of the 82-86.5 supras,Celica GT's and most cressidas share the same rear diff..Now you say that it is howling..Does that mean that it is just howling through the chassis and body like a tire noise that 4X4's normally have or a grinding sound..If it just putting out a howling then you should just check out the bushings on the rear crossmember and other suspension peices..If it is grinding then it is definitly the rear diff then..

k cool man, i had my terms mixed up. yeah its like a howl not a grind. its almost like when wind blows through your house.. that sound, and increases its pitch as the RPM go higher. but thanks for the info.
checked out your site nice ride...like the rims BTMK2 |
I would just lock it up the rear end.:)

Sorry about that had to type it fast I was at work and my boss was coming
I meant lock up the rear end. |
Lock Up!?
Wtf? |
omg, on a truck, to gain more traction off road, you turn your limited slip, or open diff to a straight axel by putting a locker in it or having a I think its called a spinddel job done on it at a four wheel shop, so the same amount of power is sent to both wheels even when turning, very useful when rock crawling, because street basics suck for offroading, but you can apply the locker to a regular street car for way better traction, I hope thats what you wanted because I read the begging real fast.

LSD diffs are better, lets the car turn better. If you put a locker in you will make it a true posi where both tires spin the same thus making it harder for the car to turn because both the rear tires want to go straight all the time. There is no give between them. If you enjoy taking corners at highspeed do not put in a true posi. Short wheelbase and true posi=poor turning. True posi is more for dragsters. If you live somewhere where it snows and you have to drive it in the snow all I can say is have fun, car won't turn for shit, not as bad in rain, but not as good as an LSD.
As for the howl have you changed the fluid lately? I have never take a mkII rearend apart but I have pulled several other rearends apart and howling is usually a bad bearing or bushing. Sure its in the rear and not the tranny, sound travels through the driveline in a funny way sometimes making it sound like something its not. Hope this helps some. |
Not much difference when its locked up, its just rougher when turning and you wear tires out in the rear way faster.
