To Be or Not to Be.. Flushed that is.

I'm told I might have a vaccum leak on my 1984 Supra auto transmission, and it's really time to get the thing flushed and looked at anyways. But of course whenever I call tranny specialists in the area I automatically get the red flag.

"We're not responsible if the tranny no longer works after it has been flushed."

I guess considering the transmissions age and what not a lot of the shops say that draining the transmission fluid has a high chance of screwing it up further. Someone told me I might have a vaccuum leak developing too because when I push on the brakes or come to a stop, the transmission has a problem with just idling and revving but not going back into gea. It's as if she slips into neutral all by herself and seems to be getting worse. If I wait for a little while she'll slip herself back in which you can feel in the car. It isn't a buck of any sort but you can feel the car move and shift somewhat when she finds her gear again. I do on occasion note a "wssh" noise though am unsure if its coming from tranny or a clogged cat or what not. She'll break out her own tires if I rev hard when she's stuck, so I try not to do so.

Question is do I drain it or do I not? Or should I get a quarter drained and put in Trans-X and hope to God that it fixes it? I guess transmissions are a bit of sticky business.

There is also this option too, a nearby Supra lover is selling his 85 Supra which has a body in better condition then mine anyways. Newly installed 7mgte (c26 turbo) with new brakes and a recently replaced head gasket in place, stickshift (don't know if the tranny was rebuilt on that one) for 3000.

The current Supra is an 84 that needs new exhaust, new brakes (down to rotors), new radiator/fan, and a rebuild on her tranny in all likliehood so I ponder if its just more worth it to get the new one. I'd like to hear what you all think. Thank you all.

Well if you love your car with the 5m and auto then just do yourself a favor and get another tranny out of the scrap yard for cheap..The clutch's and bands are all shot in yours..Then agian if you love your car and love a stick then you will really love a 7mgte version..For the money it would be worth it..Just the swap alone will cost about 1500-3000 depending on how you get parts..All in all it mostly up to you..

It wouldn't be a bad idea having a second Supra around though, one that I can rely on whilst I get the little red one back on her toes.

Wow, wou really think a tranny swap will cost that much *Falls over*
Is that the price even if I just get a rebuild on my tranny?

No i meant the 7m swap would cost around that.. My bad.. A scrap yard tranny would probably be about 100-200.. To get it rebuilt,If they will rebuild it i would say 600-800.. In my opinioni would just pick up the other supra and have the 7m swap done already and pull what parts you want off your supra and then sell whats left to make up the difference..

Looks like I am going to have to sell her anyways cuz I know if I pick up another Supra mine is just going to get used and abused anyways and I probably won't be able to build her up. Thank you much, as always Midwest.
