Starting Problem

Hi

I'm new to the group and wanted to know if anyone could help me out.
I have a 85 Supra (non turbo) and it doesn't want to start. It turns over but that's it. It was parked at a friends and when we drove it home it was very low on gas. So I thought maybe the fuel filter got clogged. I replaced it plus the air filter and even used some carb cleaner (which seemed to work for about 2-3 seconds) but still no luck. I also removed the EFI and STOP fuses to see if the system needed to re-set but that didn't work either.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated- :)

Thanks

you could have a bad fuel pump..when you turn the key on do you hear the pump come on? if not check the relay under the hood,if it is good then most likely the fuel pump is bad,not that bad,i replaced one in mt brother's 84 supra, which had the same symptom you described

I think your right. I started with the tank removal (not fun) since most connectors and boltd are rusted. Once I'm done I'll let you know how it turns out.

Thanks

i sprayed all the bolts and connectors with a penetrant and let it soak over night, that really helped make life easier and saved a few knuckles

Good idea, I'm having a hard time disconnecting the fuel tube line connector.
I'll give the penetrating spray a try- Thanks

i had the same problem with the fuel line connectors.. i used to big adjustable wrenches and broke them loose pretty easy

Okay....The Holidays are over and I finally got back to work on removing the tank. The tanks out, waiting for the pump and I'll let you know how it turns out.....

while you have the old pump out hook it to a 12v battery and see if it comes on,if not its bad,if it does then your problem is elsewhere..just do that before you go through all that trouble of replacing it and putting tank back in only to find out it still doesn't work

elsleepster 01-06-2007 08:53 PM

Okay, I'll test it

elsleepster 01-08-2007 02:45 PM

Well I didn't test the old pump, figured I'd replace it with a new one since I already had the tank off. Anyway, I got everything back on and it started right up!
Thanks for all your help and suggestions.
