suprra_girl 12-22-2004 11:35 AM

ok... here in New Zealand we have a very large variety of mk3 bodies but here is how you can tell the differences on them regardless of what year the registration ticket says it is ;)
(just as a sidenote these body differences may not apply to northern hemisphere, most of what is shown here is what japan sent to the southern hemisphere :) )

86 supra bodies....

aerial in back windscreen

body moulding looks like this on jdm models (usa used 87 moulding from 86-88)
http://www.supra.co.nz/bodydiff/86moulding.jpg

windscreen washer jets are small stubby ones like this

http://www.supra.co.nz/bodydiff/86washers.jpg

86's also have a parklight switch whereas in nz in 87 they got changed for a coin slot (in the usa i believe they still have parklight switches)

86 supras are also narrow body (flat sides, guards aren't flared out etc)
here's a pic of a narrow body & widebody... you can see the yellow one has wider front guards than the white one

http://www.supra.co.nz/bodydiff/narrowbody.jpg
also as shown above... the white supra is an 86 but had the 89 bumper and spoiler conversion done... so 86-88 = yellow bumper, 89-92 = white bumper (if you look at the turn signals you will notice that they are exactly the same as the yellow ones.. 86-88 turn signals)

taillights look like this

http://www.supra.co.nz/bodydiff/86lights.jpg

factory 86 spoiler shown above

87 bodies...

aerial in back windscreen

87 moulding is exclusive, it is not on any other year... you will never mistake an 87 unless someone went through the trouble of changing it all (which i doubt someone would go through the trouble with)
87 moulding comes in 3 colours... burgundy, gray & blue

87 moulding pic
http://www.supra.co.nz/bodydiff/87moulding.jpg

windscreen washer jets change for 89 to longer nice looking ones

http://www.supra.co.nz/bodydiff/89washers.jpg

as shown previous... widebody & narrowbody
all 87 supras are widebody from the factory
the yellow one is an 87

http://www.supra.co.nz/bodydiff/narrowbody.jpg

taillights and spoiler are still the same as 86

http://www.supra.co.nz/bodydiff/86lights.jpg

87's also came with seatbelt holders which the 86's didn't come with (in the USA only 89+ got seatbelt holders)
http://www.supra.co.nz/bodydiff/seatbeltholder.jpg

87's had a coin slot in replacement of the parklight switch (in nz, not sure of other countries, USA 87's did not come with coin slots factory)

88 bodies...

aerial in back windscreen
back to narrow body style
still retains coin slot
no seat belt holders in 88's
still have the newer style windscreen washer jets
still have 86 style taillights and spoiler
back to 86 style moulding

suprra_girl 12-22-2004 12:10 PM

89-92 bodies...

aerial changes to an automatic one in the right rear quarter in spoiler
taillight style also changes
spoiler changes to a new 3 piece with spoiler light

http://www.supra.co.nz/bodydiff/89lights.jpg

body moulding changed
http://www.supra.co.nz/bodydiff/89moulding.jpg

windscreen washer jets are still the long sleek nice ones
all are widebody (but..... generally the ga70 1ggte is an exception to the rule)

front bumper changed as well as turn signals
have a look at the front bumper and turn signals between these two.. the turn signals on the purple 89 are shorter and have little black grills rather than the yellow one which has one grill that spreads right between the two

http://www.supra.co.nz/bodydiff/facelift.jpg

if you have any other questions on body diff's post em up and i'll answer them the best i can ;)

Jester 12-23-2004 11:26 AM

very nice... are all those cars yours? the yellow one is very clean, but the white one looks like it needs some body work and a wash.

me likey

suprra_girl 12-23-2004 01:03 PM

lol yes all of them live on our property + another two..
the white one in the pic with the yellow one was my mums one, the white one that needs a clean we are stripping for parts and the purple one is also my mums old supra... shes on to her third now which is the black one i took pictures of the taillights
the yellow one is my baby ;)

Jester 12-24-2004 03:35 PM

wow your mom is cool

my mom drives a honda oddesy, and doesnt want me to get a car

das 12-25-2004 02:10 AM

I like the yellow one :-) cant think why lol

All the info is cool suprra_girl thanks, i still cant work out which mine is but thanks lol

it might help if i look at the door mouldings but i'll have to find where i put em lol

suprra_girl 12-25-2004 03:02 AM

 yea yellow is cool :P

well ur in the US aye das... so usa cars from what i was told from 86-88 use the same moulding as our 87.. so you don't get the ugly grey old moulding lol... so have a look at the 87 moulding and that will probly be your moulding, if your car was white your moulding will be a greyish colour, blue = blue moulding and burgundy = burgundy.. lots of thought went into that statement :P

so USA cars... from 86-88 you all use the 87 moulding i posted above... don't change it to 89-92.. 87 moulding is the coolest LOL

oh and das... are your pics working for your car yet.. i noticed they went down a while ago
and i think urs is 86-88 if i remember correctly your lights are 86-88 with them funny rear marker lights hehe

das 12-25-2004 08:34 PM

firstly i am in the UK not usa lol,

Not sure about the pics thing, i noticed they dissapeared but the link i posted still works fine and the pics are still up there

The car was originally a dark red/burgandy colour but i am sure the mouldings were just plain, either grey or i think they were probably black

suprra_girl 12-25-2004 09:58 PM

haha honestly i knew that... i was in a funny rambling mood last nite

ahhh good long as they're back up ;).. it seems that this forum isn't allowing me to link directly to the webshots site to show the pics on here that's why i thought it was down hehe

if ur car was burgundy, then your moulding was also burgundy ;)

Guest 01-20-2005 12:47 AM

what is the difference between 86 and 85.5 ?

suprra_girl 01-20-2005 04:23 AM

there are 86.5 mk3's... mid year toyota bought out the mk3 supra pre 86.5 they had the mk2's celica/supra shape

300hpvision 02-13-2005 03:14 AM

CAN I HAVE ONE!? :D

monkihead 04-02-2005 08:45 PM

my mom can't have a supra... she'd tear the crap out of it. she's gone through more cars than there are days in a year....are there major differences between the 89-92 supras? i know the 90 had the airbag system, thats about it..

FullOfProblemsMKIII 03-26-2006 11:50 PM

can i put 89 3 peice tail lights, front bumper, seats, rear hatch, fenders, hood, motor, harness, and rear into my 87 n/a???? very important that i know these things

suprra_girl 03-27-2006 12:59 PM

well depending on where in the world you are will determine fenders

japanese pre 89 cars didn't always come widebody

if your car is usdm you only need to change:
seats, tails, front bumper, turn signals, grills spoiler to become 89+ style

if you are a japanese supra (ga70 to be specific)
you need:
fenders, seats, front bumper, tails, turn signals, grills spoiler

if you are an 87 japanese ma70 all you require is:
tails, front bumper, spoiler, turn signals, grills

FullOfProblemsMKIII 03-27-2006 04:56 PM

both of my supras are usdm so i can swap all the things i mention i guess no?

suprra_girl 03-27-2006 09:57 PM

absolutely everything on an a70 chassis is swappable

FullOfProblemsMKIII 03-27-2006 11:28 PM

thnx!!!!!! that was very helpful:bow:

You mean 86 and 86.5. The 86 supras were MK II's, and the 86.5 ones were MK III's. That's the difference, and it's a pretty considerable one at that.

Figit090 04-07-2006 02:50 AM

WOAH ok I have a 86.5.... what exactly is the difference between widebodys and "normal" ones? what are the two widths and when were they offered??

Just curious to see what mine is.

does anyone have a key for reading the chassis codes to see what my car originally came equipped with??

or an account to free carfax reports? i'm remotely curious about my car's history.

you can see the difference in the above picture

if you are in America all supras were widebody there (these body differences apply to japanese and some american)

suprra_girl 11-01-2006 10:12 PM

thanks guys :D

i grafted the 1jz manifold onto the 7mgte lower runners :)

In the USA, the 1988 HAD seatbelt holders. ('86.5 and '87 did not)
The mirrors of the '86.5, '87, 88 were 'molded' more to the body...'89 they went to a mirror that had more of an aerodynamic 'hole' in it. (sorry, no pic)
The easiest way to spot and 87 Vs. an '88 was the '87 had a rectangle/square spoiler brake light (no pic) the '88 went to a more angled brake light.
(Only the Turbo's through 1988 came stock with spoiler)

Pictures here are my stock and original body (except wheels) 1988 Turbo. I am the original owner. Purchased in November 1987.

Does anybody know anything about Canadian models? I bought my '87 thinking it was just a normal usdm '87 Supra, until one day my friend points at a button and says, "What's that?" It was the button for the headlight washers. I later read somewhere that only Canadian models have headlight washers. I also have the coin slot, where earlier in this thread it was mentioned that US Supra's don't have coin slots.

My '88 USA car has headlight washers and coin holder. Like I said, I am the original owner, bought in California Nov. '87. So whatever you read about Canadian only models is false.

sportriderseattle 11-02-2006 02:19 AM

Here in the USA, the MK3 had the headlite washers from '86-'88, then they deleted that option/feature. I read that Canada got heated seats. This is typical to delete features when the manufacture opts for new features, such as the new front bumper and rear spoiler to name a few. I believe they did that to reduce the manufactures cost. I had a '90 Mustang GT and the center arm rest was deleted due to the addition of the airbag.

t87supra 11-02-2006 02:20 AM

Sweet, that makes more sense, thanks guys.

83restomod 01-16-2008 04:51 AM

86.5 and older were the 2ed gen supras or celica supras. do you homework

suprra_girl 01-16-2008 05:00 AM

there are already a number of usdm body difference threads, this thread in particular pertains to JDM

I have created a site dedicated to the jdm body differences here
My Car gallery

Yes 86.5 & earlier were known as the celica supra or just plain old celica but theres no need to be rude about it ;)

Hey Dude...I did my homework 'real time' because in 1986 I was alive, had a drivers license and money, and wanted that 86.5 when it first came out. The 1986.5 Supra WAS THE FIRST MK3 model in California USA. I don't care to waste my time to see if they still sold the Celica style in 86.5 too...(probably did) you can do that homework because I don't care.

After looking at several other sports cars while driving a Fiat in 1986 I decided the Supra was for me. I bought my one and only that I still have today in Nov. 1987 (1988 model).

If you found information that says 1986.5 was NOT the first MK3 model...it is wrong. Don't believe everything you read...especially on the internet. Learn to do proper homework.

hmm interesting, I have two mk3's both CADM. One's an '87 and the others a '88 but neither have heated seats. Although one came with a blockheater. I noticed I don't have a seatbelt holder, although it may be busted off on both of them being 20 years old. But I have the headlight washers on both of them so that would confirm your theory of 86.5-88 coming with them stock.

Oh and nice cars btw haha, can't wait till mines done. But you have quite the collection in your family.
