oil dipstick/compression Q

I have a 87 na and every time i go to check the oil the dipstick is pushed out about 1 inch. An then here recently my car died out of nowhere, I lifted the hood pushed the dipstick in and it ran fine. When its idling if you pull the dipstick it starts a surge idle then eventually dies, its like the dipstick determens how the car runs. I think that would be compression like my rings are going out but the engine only has 40000 on it. What do yall think.
