Well it may or may not depending on the condition of your engine seals. The detergents in the synthetic oils will "clean-up" the varnish and sludge left by conventional oils. If your engine seals are worn, the synthetic will break down the oil varnish that may be maintaining the seal. So it's not that the synthetic oil caused a leak, it just that it revealed worn seals by cleaning the varnish off of them. Many people have switched to synthetic on 100,000+ mile engines with no leaks, so it just depends on how often you changed your oil and the overall condition of your engine.

Royal purple is like $8/quart so you are looking at almost $50 per oil change

Yea, I use AMSOIL in my car, full synthetic, its like $6 something for a quart. I love it, great oil pressure, no leaks, no smoke, but I do have a JDM engine in it so the miles are quite lower than 200k plus.

Synthetic
I changed the oil in mine when i got it. i got synthetic blend. I wanted the petroleum for the detergent properties, and the synthetic for the superior lubrication properties. after 2 or 3 changes that way, most of the gunk will be out, and i can put full synthetic in.
Synthetic is superior because;

I use mobile one synthetic. First time i put the oil in i got a rear main seal leak was very minor, threw some barqs rear main seal stuff in there and after 300-400 miles the leak stoped, went ahead and changed out the oil and oil filter again after another 400 miles cuase i didnt wanna just leave that stuff in there
