Can anyone help? Cleaned out air intake, now keeps dieing.
Hi, I just purchased a 1991 Supra mk3 manual turbo. Newly reconditioned engine, running sweet as.
I thought I'd give the K&N filter that was on the Air Flow Meter a bit of a clean and clean out the throttle butterfly as in my oppinion it felt a bit gummed up. After taking everything off, and cleaning it all up i proceded to put it all bk together and went to start it. It started up fine, and idled perfectly. I then went to throttle up, and it just died. When i tried to start it again it started fine again, and throttled fine up to 2500rpm then sluttered and died. I also noticed the engine fault light was on. Now everytim I start it the fault light comes on. I tried resetting the ECU by disconnecting the battery, when I start it the ENgine fault light isn't on, but then it just dies instantly. On trying to start it again the fault light comes straight on, and it'll rev up to 2500rpm again. Something tells me its going into a "safe mode", what could I of done. I thought I'd managed to damage the air flow meter, but all the voltages are fine and a good signal coming down the cable. Has anyone got any suggestions? Many thanks, Jim |
Did you try to read the code from the computer? Try that first. It should point you in the right direction.

Cheers mate, I've just done it, it came up with 31, which is a mass airflow meter, wiring or connector problem.
So obviously I've managed to either damage the AFM, or the wiring is up the creek. Whja I need to know now, and I'm having problems, is what voltages should be coming up the wire to the AFM to therfore diagnose whether the wiring is up the creek. If it is fine, i think I may need a new afm :-( |
i have heard a few times that the K & N filters can damage the AFMs on our cars, since it is a oiled filter
|
Ow bollox. Thats exactly what I did. Since K&N's are supposed to be oiled thats what I did after I cleaned it.
Is that the end 4 my AFM then, any ideas? |
not sure, if it just has oil gunk in it, and ur sure its already shot i would suggest taking it apart and cleaning it out, taht may fix it... but personally before i mess with something like that i make sure it is already busted lol
|
I've had the AFM apart already, thought it looked a bit damp in the little holes that allow the pressure reading to be taken. I bet that was air filter oil. I wonder if I blast it out with carb cleaner and leave it on the boiler overnight to dry out it might do a miraculus recovery.
On another note, wheres the cheapest place to get an AFM from? 1. I'm a student at brighton uni so money isn't something in huge supply 2. I dunno if it even broken yet lol |
get something that is for cleaning electrical stuff dont just spray it with carb cleaner o.o
|
good plan. Ok i guess i'll hav to leave it for now.
Don't suppose anyone knows what voltages should be coming down the connector to the AFM? I'm having trouble finding them. |
Try resetting your computer. The way you do that is to remove the negative battery cable for roughly a minute and then reconnect it. It doesn't fix it right away. You have to start it and keep it running for a while cause it will try to die on you again. THe problem is the computer needs to relearn after a cleaning that good. It has all the old data stored from the way it ran before the cleaning and after the cleaning air flow is vastly improved. It will take roughly 15 to 20 minutes for it to re learn. Let me know if that helps.

did you plug in the afm?
|
I've tried all sorts with it, but its looking more and more like the AFM has had it. I've ordered another one from a breakers that has a warrentee on it (?75 :-( ) but at least if it doesn't work I can send it back and assume I hav another problem.
However I'm getting all the right voltages down the wiring and even after the connecter inside the afm, so really I think I've eliminated all other possibilites. It should turn up today, but if it doesn't cure this problem, I will be royally stumped. Cheers for your help guys, I'll let u know how it goes.:x: |
i think im having the same problem
but the K&N filter is really screwed up so thiers a new metal one is thier anyway to test if its the cables (the ones i cant reach because my hands arnt small enough) because i sprayed the Air Flow Sensor with that spray for it so its clean and a new air filter |
DRY FLOW FILTERS Gents.
I like to dis-connect both terminals for atleast 15 minutes to make sure that The battery and the ecu have both had ample time to adjust. It's like re-booting your pc. Sometimes you need to leave it off for a spell. That's about the going rate here in the states for a reman'd vafm. You should also check your timing. Keep checking for codes. Don't idle up or you'll automatically throw a 51 and that'll be your tps. |

my codes? well i came up with a 21 i think? flash flash flash.......flash
something to do with airflow everythings fine just making sure its the mass air flow sensor |
