Default releasing the tention

I'm doing a head gasket on my 89 Supra. I was going to pull the crank pulley and mark the belt down there cause I wasn't sure what would happen if I just slipped the belt off as it sits... I have heard you can release the tention from the top and just leave the crank and lower cover alone, could someone tell me how or lead me to where where it has already been explained?! thanks!
