Default I need to buy a 7M-GE replacement, info needed

My car is currently a 7M-GE with the automatic transmission and the 4.3 open rear end.

I am leaning toward putting a new engine in my '90 Mk III as the current one has a rod knocking. I found one site online that is sells a JDM 7M-GE for $850 ($550+$300 shipping to Georgia.) Just found another one for $668 including shipping.

My questions:

1. I would like to replace as little as possible to get fully operational again. Is the 7M the only engine I can use with the existing transmission/bell housing?
2. How much should I be expecting to pay for the engine?
3. Does anyone have good or bad experiences to report with various resellers.

Thanks for any feedback.

For a 7mge jdm engine over 1000$
And it still has to be rebuilt.

You get what you pay for and going the cheap route saves you ZERO dollars. Jdm engines have to be completely rebuilt. They are project engines.

Not plug and play engines.

I just called one of the companies and the rep claimed that these engines are ready for use if I am replacing the identical engine. I realize he *is* a salesperson and just might be exaggerating to get the sale so I would like some additional feedback from other people who have purchased a JDM engine on what they had to do to get the engine running in their vehicle.

I bought a JDM 7MGE through eBay, and immediately after receiving it I put it in the car- no rebuild. I have yet to have any problems with it.

However, I HIGHLY do not recommend this stupidity. Although all of these motors are "low mileage", they still have all of the problems that all 7M's have. Also, you have no clue as a consumer how that motor was treated before you got it, how long it sat around the warehouses it's been stored at, and how the previous driver drove it.

ALL USED ENGINES NEED TO BE REBUILT

That is, if you want reliable performance from it.

I'm gonna be pulling mine out when the funds are available to build it up as a Bad Ass N/A, so I'm okay with the fact that I put mine in without a rebuild. Also, my car doesn't even run due to tranny issues.

Oh yeah, if you swap in a JDM motor, you;ll have to transfer over the emission control items and a few other things for a direct plug-and-play in your US Spec Chassis.

I bought my motor for $464, and picked it up here in SoCal.

Hope this helps some

The main issue is you don't know what you're getting.
It may be the $hit, and you may break it open and it's ridden with rust.

It's a crap shoot going jdm. You should rebuild the engine in the car from the ground up before going jdm.

This isn't an easier road to travel as afore stated you get all of the same issues all wrapped up in someone elses headache.
