Default woe is turning!!!

(89 na manual)well, no questions about the motor this time, now its the power steering. Going straight is fine, merging is fine, but as far as turning more than a few degrees? talk about scarry... Whenever I need to make a sharp turn, low or high speed, the power steering fights me like crazy, and almost wont turn, but it only happens on the initial turn in, once it gets past a certain point, it goes really loose and no more problem, but diving into corners sucks cause when it goes loose changes... I was wondering if there are any common problems with the mk3 power steering system. I know some sports cars computers stiffen up power steering at high speeds to decrease the chance of oversteering(merging and whatnot) does the mk3 have that? my pump sounds fine, and I've flushed the system completely. I'm thinking the rack itself may be bad, any opinions?

Hi.

Check the belt to the steeringpump, sounds to me like it is slipping.

I don't hear any squealing, checked the tension, and inspected it, seems fine to me. took it off and spun the pump pulley, no grinding, binding, or wobbling.

Sounds like the rack. Not hard to change. No computer controls for steering.
