head bolts tool

Hi All,

I'm currently on a middle of a new gasket for my 88 Supra 7M GE.
The repair manul says we have you use SST 09043-38100 for these bolts....where would I find this tool? None of my existing tools works for this procedure...

I see that my air intake connector is pretty dirty. Is that a good idea to clean it with carb/choke cleaner?
Thank you!

Chambers 05-11-2008 07:59 PM

What bolts are you talking about? I don't know of any that require a special tool.

If you mean the pipes that connect the throttle body to the MAF sensor then yes, you can clean them with carb cleaner, but DO NOT try to clean the MAF sensor with carb cleaner!! Good luck!

10mm allen key wrench socket (the longer the better) Make sure you locate the 10mm Allen wrench right to the bottom of head bolt (clean out any muck in the bolt head first) and keep it as vertical as possible, you will need to turn the cams to gain access to four of the bolt heads depending how long your wrench is. Before you do anything make sure the block is drained of coolant.

Bill UK 05-11-2008 08:54 PM

This type of socket.

I bought a 6" long one from Matco Tools. Snap-On and Mac have them too.

Serge 05-12-2008 03:35 AM

Alright...Thank you All !
will but it tomorrow....

supramacist 05-12-2008 03:43 AM

You guys may think me ignorant. But it works.

I went to lowes. I bought a 4 inch long bolt with a head that fit my needs.
I bought a 2 inch long 2 way adapter type nut.

I used red loctite on it. It's what I use when I hit that portion of the engine.

It cost me less that $4.

Serge 05-12-2008 04:12 AM

That is interesting solution...I'll think about it
Thank you!

slader99 05-12-2008 02:20 PM

I use a similar type solution. If you have lots of metric hardware around find a long bolt, two matching nuts, turn the nuts onto the end of the bolt, and lock them together. If you find its still slipping you can destry the threads of your toyota SST with a flat head screw driver. Might save a trip to the store....

this is how it looks like I took it apart...the gasket looks very badly. At list three of my cylinders are blown...

any suggestions?

supramacist 05-13-2008 03:23 PM

Looks like it was go or blow time.

Nice job. It looks much worse than it is serge.

Once you start cleaning it up. You'll see.

Serge 05-17-2008 04:48 AM

You are right. It's not so bad. Next question....
What set better to buy for the repair and where? I guess I need a new bolts as well.
Where would I find all this stuff with better quality?
Thank you!

supramacist 05-17-2008 06:09 AM

Performance Parts Aftermarket and Racing

Dial ext. 103 and speak to Dave.
tell him mike sent you.

He'll take care of you. Make sure he knows what engine you're dealing with. Because he auto-assumes it's a turbo.

He get's parts to me from where ever, faster than some of my local parts houses.

Serge 05-17-2008 05:21 PM

Thank you, Mike. I'll give him a call...

Serge 05-18-2008 07:41 AM

Guys,
where would I find a tool SST 09202-70010 to remove my valves? please let me know.
Thank you!

Bill UK 05-18-2008 09:24 AM

Valve Spring Compressor US this is the one I've used = Valve Spring Compressor UK

Serge 05-18-2008 05:31 PM

Thanks Bill. I'm going to order this tool.

supramacist 05-18-2008 11:14 PM

Are you gearing up for a valve job serge???

If you are. I want to implore you to look into your tsrm and possibly think twice.

There are like a gazillion small parts in that task and if you loose something onto the floor you may not have an easy time finding it.

So if you do this sweep the floor 1st :).

I say this because I thought about doing my own setup as well till I saw some pics and I knew I couldn't do it.

Food for thought is all.

Bill: You're the man. Please stick around.

Bill UK 05-18-2008 11:24 PM

That first link is for supra but it doesn’t say which model, may be worth checking first. The one in the second link defiantly does the job, if you can source it in the US. Supramacist you know more than I do, and you respond faster than me, even though I'm 5-7 hours ahead of you. We are already in Monday morning in the UK.

supramacist 05-18-2008 11:43 PM

What I meant Bill was don't run off because Andy is running.
I don't agree that I know more than you.

How can you say that? you where whipping my arse on trying to help andy. You were posting before me and everything.

Serge 05-19-2008 03:44 AM

Thank you all guys. I was going to do the job by my hands... I'm still thinking about that.

supramacist 05-19-2008 03:57 AM

What is it really that you are gearing up to do serge?
You never really stated it outright:).

Serge 05-19-2008 04:19 AM

I have been for three years in the USA and this is my first sports car....I did this kind of job only once in my life and that was very simple car.... not like Supra.... but I still would like to try it...:)

supramacist 05-19-2008 04:33 AM

Dude.... try what:confused:?.

Tell me more Serge. I'm dying to know what you're really doing.

EDIT: a valve job???

MK3 TSRM On-Line

You should peep it out in here. You don't want to do a valve job in your garage.

This is how it currently looks like....I just thought that cleaning of exicting valves with replacment of new seals would be enough for this procedure. I think that's doable in my garage....Why not?

supramacist 05-19-2008 05:42 AM

All I'm saying is be very very careful. :)

Serge 05-19-2008 01:18 PM

alright....thank you.

How about SST 09201-41020 for installation of new oil seals for the valves? Have you seen them somewhere?
Thank you.

Bill UK 05-20-2008 07:42 PM

Mine where very similar to these Sealy, You need to be very careful when fitting the new seals, I managed to split two of mine. If the head needs to be skimmed by a machine shop I would ask them for a price for re cutting the valves seats, inserting new seals and reset the valve lifter shims, they will also do a pressure test. You may find by the time you’ve bought all the tools; dial gauge micrometers, and the rest you could be halfway towards paying the machine shop to do it.

Bill UK 05-20-2008 08:12 PM

There’s a good guide HERE for adjusting valve shims.

Serge 05-21-2008 01:36 PM

Thanks Bill !

Is there any difference between 7MTGE and 7MGE head bolts? Where would I buy ARP bolts for 7MGE?
Thanks!

supramacist 06-17-2008 06:20 AM

No difference. Use the moly and follow arp's torque spec of 70lbs.

Serge 06-17-2008 06:32 AM

MIke,
Do you know where better to buy it?
Thank you

Serge 06-17-2008 06:40 AM

one more question....

Something was squeaking under hood when bought this car with blown engine. I thought that was a water pump but now I'm not sure because it looks good to me...
Do you guys have any ideas? 110,000 mileage
Thank you

supramacist 06-17-2008 07:07 PM

I use 3 places mainly.

The dealership.
Horsepowerfreaks.
Lowes.

You don't need the sst tool.

You can accomplish your goal without it and if you're still waiting to find the sst tool you could have already had your head back.

Guys,

What socket do I have to use with ARP bolts? My current 14 doesn't hold more than 60ft/lbs.Maybe I need better quality socket....
Thank you!

Bill UK 07-18-2008 07:14 PM

ARP studs/bolts are made in the US, I think your find they are imperial (inch) use a 9/16 long reach socket with a 3/8 drive, if your torque wrench is 1/2 use an adaptor. Thread size is 12 mm x 1.25 just in case you need to clean out the holes in the bock, which I recommend you do.

Thanks Bill. It's done now with 90ft/lbs.
I have a next question. How properly to clean the cold start injector? It's dirty and I would like to clean it up.

Serge 07-22-2008 06:34 AM

Okay,
The engine is working already...Do I have to replace catalutic after the running of this supra with blown gasket? How would I figure it out? (mileage 111000miles)
Thank you!
