What is the proper engine oil weight range for the 7m-gte?

I have the 7m-gte engine and it has approximately 104000 miles on it and has been rebuilt and head gasket replaced. I recently purchased the vehicle and don't know what is the best oil for this vehicle. I went down to the local Toyota shop and asked for the correct oil for my vehicle and bought it. When I returned and actually looked at the bottle it said Toyota brand 5w-20. It says it's made for Toyota engines and has been approved for turbocharged engines. Well that seemed a little odd to me so I haven't changed it, I do have a Toyota oil filter that will replace the fram that's in there.

I did some reading and appearantly it is a fairly new type of oil? And appearantly most(some/all?) newer vehicles use the new 0w-20 and 5-20 blends as recommended by the manufacturer? Well anyways, the little gif image available from this handbook link ( MK3 TSRM On-Line ) is a little too blurry so can anybody tell me what they suggest I use? Does it say 10w-30 in the middle band? Oil brand? High mileage oil? Synthetic? I live roughly 2000 ft above see level and the climate is going to be from cool (50 degrees Fahrenheit) to hot (maybe up too 100 degrees max but you never know..) Um I think that should be most of the details, help is greatly appreciated as I would really like to change the oil and treat this car right. =D

I live in Denver, similar temp variations. I usually run 10W-30 up until early summer and then switch to 10W-40. Depends on how hard you're going to be running the car and how well your cooling system is doing it's job.

I used to run Castrol GTX High Mileage, but now that most of the engine's rebuilt and all of my seals are new I run a synthetic blend.

Hi.
I am using Motul 300V competition, full synthetic, competition oil. It is a 15W50, above existing standards.
With it you should be carefull not to WOT till the engine is at normal operation temperature, but after that.... WooOt. :)
I used to run on semisynthethic oil (10W40) or somethingm and I was putting almost 1/2 l oil for 1 l gas :), not to say it ruined my crankshaft bearings.
but this is just me.

There's a lot more wrong with your car than just the oil weight... :frown:

Toyota only recommends 20W-50 for the HOTTEST environments for a reason... I'm not going to get into this here though. There's a TON of info on oil and what weights fit your needs the best over at supramania.com.

Well, if you live somewhere cold I would use the 5w-20 remember (ei. 10W is the thickness when you pour the oil, or in your case 5W, and the 20 is the molecular strength of the oil.
