check your speedometer cable. I think you have to change it

but do they have seperate cables for the odometer and the speedometer? |

are there any other possibilities that i can look for as well that would cause the speedometer to stop working?

i just pulled a speedometer cable from an 86 non turbo for my 87 turbo. will the cable work in the 87 turbo ?

It should work but there is a difference in auto trans vs. manual for the cable for the bottom section. There should be a section at the bottom of the cable 12" or so. That is the section that screws in the tranny. If you have to buy that section, you can get one new from a toyota dealer for $12 I just replace mine last week.
