ok, me and my brother have gotten into possesion a pair of mkIII turbo in near perfect conditions. a red 88 or 89 (we are not sure) and a white 90/91 (not sure again) the red one is manual and the white one is automatic,,, but it has targa tops...... we both hate automatics and we both love targas so we are in a dispute as of who's going to take what car..... So, I was wondering if anyone knows about transmisions and about swaping an automatic for a manual.
my dad keeps telling us that it is much more trouble than we ca handle ( he argues that we have to replace the car computer, the tranny (of course) the drive shaft, the rear axle, and bore holes in the body of the car for all the extra stuff.
my uncle says it is just a matter of taking the tranny out and bolting the manual unit with all of its contraptions.

so if you know please drop a line in this forum :D thanks in advance!!!

P.S. does anyone have a set of tires? mine are all slick (just kidding)

cool! I read the post thanks, it helped some, but went ahead a read some more on the matter. seems like the transmission I want to get for the supra is a R154 or something like that (I am at work so I don't have the info here with me) I gathered that from a discussion in some forum about adapting the forementioned tranny to a MkII (which happens to use some other tranny w46 or something like that) my point is, does anyone know about adapting the 6 speed tranny from the MkIV into the MkIII? or if you please at least tell me the "name" (or part number) of the tranny so I can look it up somewhere... or at least point me to a link that might have something about the matter, I looked for two days, but since all about the MkIV is very.......... "fast and furious" on the net, its vague and hard to find facts about it.

thanks again

P.S. "I found a set of michelin tires with more than half of their life for 200 bucks woohoo!!!"

the 6 speed on the mk4 is the getrag v160 and i'm not sure if it has been adapted to the mk3 yet

R154 is a very strong box and can handle quite well... the gearbox behind the non turbo 7mge is the w58 and is also behind the 5mge

cool cool, I can use that for future searches. I already knew about the mkIII tranny names, I just had the info at home (I don't know it by heart) I will look into the matter and will post my finds (if anything interesting comes up) if you guys wish.
Again thanks

ok the answer is NO, I did a bit of research and I stumbled across this page which tho it isn't about supras it has the answer to my question, and to all those interested in the answer

Well there, MKIIIs, can't use the getrag v160. but I also know now that converting an automatic to a manual 5 speed is not that hard.

that wraps it up

Ok, so let me get this straight. You say it is easily possible to do an automatic to manual swap in an MKIII? Come across any particular information as to a list of what needs to be obtained? I too am in the same boat as I just picked up a 7MGE 87 in great condition for $800. Only real bitch is that it's an auto. This is my first venture in to a sports car as I've only done a bit of work with my Isuzu Rodeo. I'm sure I'll be a regular on here though. I'd be happy to share any info I obtain in converting this rig into something worth wild. Maybe if you're interested, we can simultaneously do a switch and help each other if one of us runs into a problem?

well, I don't really mean it's a snap, I just meant that it's just a matter of getting the parts and replacing them, instead of having to machine parts to custom fit this to that.
there's a post pinned on the general FAQ here with a list of parts but since I already own a MkIII stick shift all I have to do is lift the girls' dresses and see what I need. I will be doing this swap in a few months since the automatic supra doesn't run yet. I'll be posting as I go
