Exhaust Cloud when Starting Engine
 

Hey everybody, I have been noticing a problem with my supra when I start it. There is a small cloud of grayish smoke that comes out of the exhaust pipe when I start the car for the first time in a few days. I'm not sure if its running too rich or there is water or something else. Any ideas? And I don't believe its doing it when I'm driving. It does smell somewhat like fuel when I get out and stand on the side of it.

Mine is doing the same thing after doing a head gasket. I have been told it means your valve guides are worn, they say. Mine were checked out and I was told they were ok when the head was machined. I have also noticed the fuel smell as though its too rich same color smoke. Which could be leaking injectors a faulty coldstart injector or a fuel relay issue in the system.. Answer me this please. Do you have any lack of power?? Keep me posted if find anything out cuz Im trying to find out the same as I have a lack of power and that smoke that clears up and dont know where I should start.

I do have a lack of power, but mainly due to a kickdown cable error. (The car won't downshift.)

Sounds like valve seals... Check for a hint of blue color in the smoke next time you see it.

I have the exact same problem, I get a blueish colored exhaust cloud at start up after its been sitting for an entire day and the exhaust smells heavy (like in winter). I'd love to get a couple opinions on where to start looking.

blue smoke on start up is a sure sign of worn/old valve seals or worn valve guides, removal of the head and dissembly of the valve train is the best way to do it. Unless you are burning massive amount of oil, i would just keep an eye on the oil level and not bother with replacing the seals until you need to go in there for something else.

Thanks man, the oil burning is not an issue at all, it just been a tiny amount over the last 4 months. Nothing I'm going to worry about. However winter is coming so I might just tear it down and do it for a learning project.
