Starter Removal question

Not really a starter removal question as a starter bolt removal question.... How the heck do you get to these things. I have the front end up on jackstands. I figure the lower bolt is easiet to remove that way. What about the upper? Elbows and extensions??? The bottom bolt goes all the way through the transmission bellhousing and has a nut on the end. I figure a box wrench on one end and a 1/2 drive ratchet on the other should work fine. Anybody ever done this, replace the starter that is. Anybody got any tips? The starter is already off the block as the outer casing broke. I am not really worried about getting the bolts out as getting them back in. Help me out here guys. Don't suggest the TSRM as it just says to remove the bolts and take out the starter... installation is the reverse:help:

This is just one of the PITA bolt locations on your Supra. I managed to get to mine by using a 14mm box end on the hex head over the starter, and a 14mm socket with a swivel on a long extension. You'll also need to be patient. I cursed for a while getting everything to line up. That hex head on top of the starter I had to do by feel.

Another PITA is one of the nuts on the clutch master cylinder. It is up high under the dash, and hidden from view. Had to do that one totally by feel, too.

luckily, it was actually quite easy once the car was up on jackstands. Thanks for the insight though. The top was a PITA royally!!!! Got the starter in and the car turned over fine... it did not start though... Just look at my other thread started today....

Starter Blues

Easy? It doesn't seem easy I am having little luck how high did you jack your car how did you get the starter out?> Bottom? Did you remove the manifold?

batmmannn 05-08-2010 11:00 PM

Easy???

Tried from the top right forearm is scratched to hell now. I don't see how you could even get this out of the car if you managed to get that top bolt loose. I can't see it and the one I can reach is a 12mm not a 14 mm so I don't think that one is right. Damn I wish I had a lift. Gonna try getting the wires free from the starter and see if it gives me any more room. What a PAIN IN THE ASS!

Yeah for anyone doing a hg it is a good idea to do the starter too like I did. It is way easier without the head on.

batmmannn 05-09-2010 12:14 AM

Its impossible

I can't get my arm in there. What do I have to take off from the top to get to that bolt? The entire manifold?

When I did mine, I stuck the box end of a wrench on the top bolt (the hex that faces the front of the car), and used a ratchet with about 24" of extensions and I think a u-joint adapter with my socket on the end. I went at it along the topside of the transmission body, up to the bolt

Starter

So far I can't even get more than a finger tip on this bolt I don't understand how you were able to get to it from the rear. Did you take anything off? Thanks

CanadianBak'inSupra 05-09-2010 02:08 PM

man i hate removing the starter, but u gotta take off your intake manifold for the top ones.
its laim also u have to have it removed to take tranny off

Starter

Actually it was a bitch but with help from this forum I was able to do it without removing anything but it was not easy. The starter is in but I let the car sit too long. I need to soak the cylinders. It barely turns over and is very stiff so I am going to put penetrating oil in the plug holes let it sit a few days and then work it loose with the crank bolt and a braking bar. The car sat for years with me planning to get to that starter but every time I tried I got so frustrated I nearly gave up. I finally have it on the road back. I think it will be OK hopefully once I get it lubed and freed a bit. It ran great when parked but had that bad starter. It actually turned a half or more revolution under starter power but I did not want to push my luck the positive terminal was getting hot. I need a spark plug wrench that will fit this thing, my standard doesn't do it. Anyone know what I need?

CanadianBak'inSupra 05-10-2010 02:10 PM

the spark plugs on the 7m are rather anoying.
but a plug wrench with a rubber ring in it to hold the plugs makes it a dream!!!

Hey Scott, sorry for taking so long to even notice this thread. I ended up junking my MkIII soon after I got it running. Fuel pump went, then I started have a bunch of electrical problems. Swapped the interior out for a mostly complete CT26 application. I also picked up an MX73(cressida) and a couple of Mk II supras as well. The drivetrain got saved(engine, tranny, driveshaft and diff), but most of the rest went away. So I hardly check this forum anymore. Sounds like you got the starter swapped out. One of the toughest things to do one these cars, besides the fuel filter. I will try to give you a call this afternoon or evening. We are having weather here today and I may be out chasing most of the day.

Ken
