but it never started. Started with the regular stuff. No fuel, but I think that is cause the tank is empty. Started thinking for a second(never a good thing according to my wife). Pulled plug wire number 1... EEEEWWWWWW!!!!!!!!! I didn't think to start taking pictures till plug number 3. Here they are though...
Plug number 4 after I had let it drain a bit... ![]() Plug number five right after removal. ![]() Plug number six immediately after pulling... ![]() As you can see, I had the dreaded oil on top of plugs syndrome. It was really, really bad. Bad doesn't even begin to describe it. You can see the depth of the oil on the spark plug socket. Needless to say, the valve covers came off as did the center one. NAPA is on the list of stops tomorrow for some gaskets and plug wires, these are shot!!! Good news though, as clean as the cams and valve areas were I am going out on a limb and say that the headgasket on this one has blown and been changed. There was no sludge and the valleys were clean enough to eat off of! I will snap some pics of the cam areas and the newly cleaned cam covers tomorrow and everybody else can make their own observations |

Okay, got some pics of the cams and such today. I think, knowing that the odometer shows 197XXX miles, that some one has had the head off and done some work. These look a little too clean for as many miles as the odometer shows. My wife's camry has 150K + and they look like they have been dipped in coffee. These have really no tint to them at all. The valleys are clean. Well, take your own look and let me know what you think.

its possible the head was off, but they could have been good with maintenance, if you change the oil consistently and on time with a good oil, your engine will look clean like that.

I'm not new to cars and I get how they work, but don't know much bout engine internals. I have an idea of what each part does/looks like/where it is inside the block, but have some questions. How are the cams lubed? did you have to drain all the oil before taking the valve covers off? If I wanted to do this, am I looking at an hour job or a weekend? thanks

after the engine is turned off, all the splashing oil up there drains back down to the pan, so no you dont have to worry about anything oil related. Just unscrew the covers and youl see what you see in that picture. the cams are lubes through pressurized oil passages in it. Pressurized oil goes through a hole in the front camshaft saddle, and there is a hole in the surface of the cam that slides against that, and everytime the holes match up while its spinning, oil gets pushed through that hole, that hole goes all the way down the center of the camshaft and there are holes on all the other slideing surfaces on the cam journals, and oil from the front is fed to those

Just seeing how the rest of this car was taken care of, I am making a WAG and saying that it may not have been well cared for much of its life. What do stock headbolts look like? As far as I can tell, the ones in this head are black and look like they might have a hex opening in the top. I haven't been able to get one cleaned off enough to tell exactly what they look like. Anybody have a picture of the original head bolts for my comparison? Thanks again for the help.
