I am in a quandry. I have an ignition key, but it does not match my door or hatch lock. Is there any way that I can get a toyota dealer to get me new keys? Am I reduced to finding mismatched sets through ebay?

toyota probably could make you some. Give your local dealer a call and go from there. |

Skipping ahead... when you get a car, there is a keycode.. that comes with them (at least I know every car I had 2000+ has had it.. even the '96) Its a tiny tin dogtag, usually stuck with the driver's manual... If not.. then the dealership can cut one from the VIN. And.. by the way, the old keys had different shapes.. one would do everything, one wouldnt do the hatch and glove compartment. If this is a MKIII, I believe you can get them copied but the key blank is usually a touch thicker than some kiosks carry. If your wanting the original, I am fairly certain the dealership can get one made. (then... before you actually do get one made.. check a locksmith. Sometimes they have solutions that are a lot cheaper)

Just give the dealer your VIN number. Go ahead and get the key code too in case at some point the key code goes off their book (with older cars that can happen sometimes). The dealer will be happy to give it to you. Your car may have had a replacement ignition switch put in at some point and maybe they did not rekey the doors/truck at the same time. On my 1990 Supra I have one key that works in the ignition, door and hatchback. I am not sure how other models are. A professional locksmith could do it too, but I would start with the dealer. Good luck, you'll be ok! djfides |

The dealer wanted $260.00 to cut keys for me, whereas the locksmith wanted $90.00. And here the locksmiths have the old keycodes...

was for my 88 Cressida, non-chip version. All keys. (I got them cut for free btw because I bought a AMA right before hand). The key disintegrated in the ignition barrel. (literally)
