BHG i think
Hi I'm new to the supra world. I bought a supra last month and think I blew the head gasket already. When i bought it the guy i bought it from said it had an air bubble in the cooling system from when he replaced the radiator. Well from time to time i hear a sloshing sound behind the dash. The wierd thing is the car never gets hot, I don't have coolant on the ground (i did at one point but a heater hose blew it had a pinhole in it) the car runs good, but i am losing coolant somewhere. What i'm wondering is if it is the HG since i have a N/A can i use a toyota OEM gasket and and ARP bolts? I don't want to have to do this again. I will be sending the Head out to get machined and will likely lap the block myself. I have no intensions of doing any performance upgrades or anything like that just want to keep it as a daily driver. thanks

If you're getting the head machined and the block lapped, I suggest going with an HKS metal HG and ARP studs torqued to ARP specs. I think thats around 80 ft/lbs or so. MHG and ARP studs are the best way to ensure that you won't get BHG

dont bother with the MHG. You need to remove the engine and get it done professionally for a good seal. Get the head machined and clean the block surface well, no need to lap it, just get a real strait-edge and make sure its flat. I reccomend you get a full head gasket set, because most of the gaskets you remove are going to be very old and broken, so you need new ones. Try to find a "Stone" gasket set, ask your machine shop if they have that.
First off though, make sure you actually have a BHG before you go doing all this. Is there any smoke? Is there any coolant in the oil/oilin the coolant? |

check the oil first if its milky then its a bhg and if you have to do a coolant pressure check and possibly pull the plugs before doing it to listen for leaks this should tell you if you have a leak my guess is bhg.

The oil is clear. I did a tune up 2 weeks ago and the plugs came out ok. With the exception of the number 3 & 4 plugs, they were original and quite ugly. First time i ever saw 20 year old plugs. The car has never smoked, with the exception of when i did the tune-up, there was oil on top of the plugs and i let some of it drain into the cylinders. But never any white smoke. That is why i don't understand where the coolant is going. Then today after school the car was dumping coolant out from behind the block somewhere. i popped the rad cap and it stopped think i have another blown heater hose. It would be that smaller one that just does a 90degree turn from right behind the exhaust manifold. I bought this car last month with no idea what i was getting into. I like the car but are supras always this finicky?
