What makes you think it’s the cat, not sure about the US models, but the UK Turbo has two cats; one in the down pipe and one just after the gearbox.

It's not your cat that's killing your mileage, I would guess at something in your fuel delivery system. Or it could be something with your ECU. If your turbo is stock/cali model it'll have 2 cats, one in the DP, one between the DP and the cat back. If it's standard US it'll just have the one between the DP and cat back. If you plan on replacing the cat, get a high-flow cat, it'll make the turbo spool faster and it'll still be street legal (and you should still be able to pass smog)

Getting one from Pick a Pull won't work. They legally can't seel the Cats, and from what I've seen at all the ones I've been to they're ripped out before the car hits the yard. Besides, you don't really want to buy a used cat... It could be damaged or clogged and end up being a waste of money

This is true. I would not trust a used cat.
Another thing I didn't think of that could be causing the bad fuel economy is a failing or clogged MAF. If your MAF isn't working properly, your ECU might be running the car extra rich to prevent detonation. Just another idea. But definitely take it to a (professional) mechanic and have him/her check it out. |

I pretty sure that's where the wiring hooks into the MAF on the top of the housing.
