Default Timing belt tensioner HELP !

I had a new head gasket put on 2 days after getting my 87 supra. I had water pump, timing belt, etc replaced but the mechanic did not tell me until I picked it up that I'll need to replace the timing belt tensioner(can't tell you how pissed I was). So can anyone tell me if this is something I can do? I have some mechanical knowledge but just asking for input first before getting into something that I shouldn't. Thanks for any help!
