I've got no EGR system

Due to a blown head gasket I've taken the head off my 7M-GTE to discover it has no EGR cooler, which is a plate on the back. I've also got no EGR valve. Instead I have a little plate blocking off the exhaust hole where the EGR cooler would cover effectively ignoring the EGR system altogether. Does anyone know of any reason why I shouldn't keep this setup? I've driven my car for two years without a problem, besides the headgasket. That was always going to happen though.

If you've got a JDM ecu, no problem, as JDM engines didn't have the EGR system. It's only when you've got a USDM engine or an ecu which is setup for an EGR to be present that it's a real problem.

It is indeed a japanese import, so I guess I am good to go! You little beauty! Thanks for the input.

Just cause the engine is JDM doesnt mean the ecu is. Check it.

So if I wanted to block off my EGR I would need a JDM ECU not the U.S. spec ECU?

^ Yes. Probably easier to get your egr working.

California models require a small resistor to be wired into the EGR wiring plug to fool the ECU into thinking the EGR is still there. It will show the Check Engine light and store a fault code if the EGR is removed and there is no resistance in the system. Non-California cars don't care whether it is hooked up or not. I've had mine disconnected for several years now, with absolutely no ill effects. My buddy has the same car (89 7MGTE), but his was a Cali car, so his check engine light came on when we ditched his EGR. We googled a fix somewhere, got a resistor from Radio Shack, and fixed it all up, also several years ago.
