Question about exhaust
Hey, the car i am looking at has no muffler due to the last half of the exhaust is gone. While looking at the car i smelled some gas like smell coming out from the exhaust and was just wondering if that was a big problem or is it just because the last half of the exhaust isnt there. Also what would be a quick fix because the tags expire this month and if i get it i will have to deq it and i don't think it will pass smelling like that.

Does the car still have it's Catalytic Converter(s)? I believe that without it you might smell a little gas.
Also, I don't know if this holds true in other states, when I lived in CA you could register a vehicle "non-op" for about $15. This way you'd get time to fix it and be exempt from any future registration fees until you started to drive it again. Of course, you would have to make sure the registration is up to date first. BTW, have you had a chance to see the car and check the other issues yet?

No i havent had a chance to take another look yet, the guy is out of town but he left the car and title with his friend to sell for him while hes out for a week, im still deciding on whether i should take a look at it again when hes gone or not. Also on a stock exhaust for the mk3 how many catalytic converters are there? and is it further up the car up in front or is it near the end by the muffler?

Some of them will have 2 converters. The first one would be in the pipe leading down right after the exhaust manifold, and the other one would be next to the transmission.
