I am looking at purchasing a 1990 Targa Supra (its an atuo...) that has 120k miles on it. The onwer says that the water pump has just recently started to leek, but its not driping or gushing its just moist to the touch. So, how hard is it to change the water pump? Also what other parts of the car have a tendansy to need replacing or fixing at this age and milage? Any input is greatly welcome, Any comments or anthing you think I need to know about the car is also welcome.

Thanks

Headgasket seems to be the number one weakness with these cars, so make sure it's not the headgasket, and actually the waterpump. Seeing that it's a Targa top, check and see if it leaks, same with the back hatch and see if there is rust under the spare tire. Any car that old and with that many miles is going to have quirks, but it is a Toyota....

i doubt the water pump theory .

there are few hoses that are right over this area and the water housing is right there .

there is a little 3 inch and aprrox 5/8 ID with a 90 degree bend hose right behind and above the water pump . its hard to get to, need to pull the power steering fluid tank and find it just under the cam position sensor .

Well I test drove the car, it seems alright with slow driving, whent I floored it it held about 4-5 psi. But after speeds of about 60mph there is alot of wheel vibrations, the tires are really worn, would that cause it or is it probably that and alignment? Also I think the headgasket is starting to leak oil, but im not sure i am having some one else from a performance shop look at it tomarrow. There is a little bit of rust in the back under the spare, were there is some standing water, so it is leaking some were back there. but the transmission seemed to shift strong and fine.

Since your having vibration when you going around 60 mph, you probably need to check the rotors and brakes. They might be worn out too. You would also need to have new tires and wheel balance and alignments too. Mine was doing the same thing back than, but after I got my wheels balance and alignment, they run fine.

It's good to have a mechanic take a look at it too. Good idea.

Just look at the owner of the car, if he seems like a car caring person than he should have been taking good care of the car. Also, ask him how many owners have had the car in the past. For my car, I'm like the 3rd owner. That just sounds right because I'm the 3rd owner of the 3rd generation Supras. ha ha ha

from my opinion with the water pump see if its not over heatin cuz the water pump leads to the thermastat then goes to the cylinder head which fucks up the car do a compretion check to see if the cylimder heads fine other then that the water pump is kinda easy to fix.....
